Mogale City’s law enforcement agencies are strengthening compliance with municipal by-laws by taking decisive action against traders operating without required permits.
As part of Operation Thuntsha Lerole, Public Safety officials, working alongside the city’s Local Economic Development (LED) Department, yesterday demolished unlawful trading structures erected along Jacobs Street in Chamdor.
Led by Executive Mayor Lucky Sele, the operation forms part of the municipality’s broader initiative to restore order, promote compliance and create a safer more organised trading environment. It also seeks to ensure that street and informal traders operate from designated areas and meet the necessary regulatory requirements.
In line with these efforts, the municipality has reiterated a clear message to informal traders: No permit, no trade.
According to the LED Department, affected traders were notified as early as April 2026 to vacate the area and comply with municipal regulations. Despite repeated warnings and opportunities to regularise their operations, several traders continued to operate unlawfully, prompting enforcement action.
The municipality has therefore encouraged residents wishing to conduct informal trading activities to apply for the necessary permits through LED before commencing trade.
In addition to permit compliance, traders are reminded of their responsibility to adhere to public health and safety requirements. This is particularly important for food vendors, as health regulations prohibit the preparation and sale of food in unhygienic conditions or areas that do not meet the required standards.
Inspections will continue to ensure compliance with applicable legislation, municipal by-laws, and public health regulations.
Operation Thuntsha Lerole will continue across various parts of the city as part of the municipality’s ongoing efforts to improve public safety, maintain order, support compliant trading practices, and create an environment that benefits both traders and residents.
