Mogale City has officially unveiled its redeveloped Civic Centre, marking the first completed development project under the Krugersdorp CBD Precinct Plan and a significant milestone in the Municipality’s long-term vision to revitalise the inner city.

The unveiling brought together Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Jacob Mamabolo, government and private-sector partners, and local businesspeople, underscoring the importance of collaboration in shaping the future of Krugersdorp’s Central Business District (CBD).

More than a modern municipal office complex, the redeveloped Civic Centre represents a tangible investment in the inner city, addressing operational challenges while signalling a renewed commitment to creating a functional, accessible and attractive urban environment.

For years, Krugersdorp CBD has faced challenges ranging from deteriorating buildings and ageing infrastructure to declining commercial activity, illegal occupation and public safety concerns. The Civic Centre development marks progress in translating the broader precinct plan into tangible projects aimed at improving the urban environment, restoring confidence and creating opportunities for renewed economic activity and investment.

Speaking at the unveiling, Executive Mayor Lucky Sele highlighted the significance of the development, emphasising that the Civic Centre represents more than a change in municipal accommodation.

“For many years, our municipal headquarters have been affectionately known as the ‘White House’. That name is part of the familiar history of our city. But as our civic precinct develops, I want the identity of Mogale City to be increasingly associated with modern architecture, institutional excellence and visible progress,” the Mayor said.

He emphasised that the development should reflect the municipality’s commitment to residents, the standards expected of its officials and the role public infrastructure can play in restoring confidence in the inner city.

“When investors look at our CBD, I want them to see a municipality that understands that public infrastructure is not only about accommodation; it is also about confidence, economic activity and the future of our city.

“We are not abandoning our history. We are building the next chapter of it,” he said.

The development is also expected to deliver practical benefits for residents and the municipality. Bringing municipal departments and services together at the Civic Centre will make it more convenient for residents to access municipal services while supporting improved coordination and operational efficiency across departments.

The consolidation of municipal offices is expected to save the municipality more than R3 million annually in rental costs. The facility also incorporates energy- and water-efficiency measures intended to promote more sustainable operations and reduce long-term operating expenses.

Supported through National Treasury’s Neighbourhood Development Partnership Programme, the project forms part of the municipality’s broader efforts to turn its long-term urban renewal vision into visible and measurable progress.

The participation of provincial leadership in the unveiling further highlighted the importance of cooperation between spheres of government in advancing infrastructure development and urban regeneration.

While the Civic Centre represents a major milestone, the revitalisation of Krugersdorp CBD extends well beyond a single development. The precinct plan identifies further interventions, including the expansion of Bob van Reenen Stadium and the revitalisation of Coronation Park, Fountain Street Market and Library Square.

These projects are intended to enhance public spaces, stimulate economic activity and create a more welcoming environment for residents, businesses and visitors. Their success will depend on sustained implementation and continued collaboration between government, the private sector, property owners and communities.

The unveiling therefore marks both the completion of a significant municipal infrastructure project and an important step towards the wider regeneration of Krugersdorp’s inner city.

As Mogale City builds on this achievement, its broader ambition is to restore confidence in the CBD, attract investment and create an inner city that reflects the aspirations of its people: one that is functional, accessible, economically vibrant and attractive to residents, businesses and visitors alike.
