The Ga-Mogale Sports Complex is now open, providing residents of all ages with access to sporting and recreational facilities closer to home.

Executive Mayor Lucky Sele announced the opening to scores of young people during the official launch this morning, highlighting the municipality’s commitment to expanding access to sport and recreation infrastructure in rural communities.

Situated on shared municipal land that borders a recently developed landfill site, the complex was developed in phases.

Phase 1 focused on securing the premises through the construction of 2.4-metre-high entrance walls, sliding gates, pedestrian gates and a concrete palisade wall. It also included a guardhouse, a conservancy tank, and water and electricity connections.

Phase 2 involved upgrading the soccer field, constructing combination courts and refurbishing the existing ablution facilities.

The facility is expected to benefit not only young people but also older residents who previously used the grounds for walking and keeping active. The “golden oldies” return could create opportunities for elderly groups to engage in regular physical activities and, in time, compete against their counterparts from other parts of the municipality through programmes such as Active Ageing and the Golden Games.

The facility is also well positioned to support rural sports leagues, allowing teams across different sporting codes to participate in competitions closer to their communities, reducing the need to travel to other facilities near the municipality’s administrative centre.

While the facility is ready for use, further improvements are to be planned and implemented, subject to budget availability in the future.  The planned upgrades for phase 3 include landscaping and beautification, installation of a borehole, and electrical works for the kiosk, soccer field and combination courts, including the commissioning of the installations.

The opening of the Ga-Mogale Sport Complex marks an important step towards more equitable access to sport and recreation in rural communities, reinforcing Mogale City’s commitment to ensuring that residents of all ages and backgrounds have opportunities to participate, stay active and contribute to community life, leaving no one behind in all the corners of the Municipality.
