Young people across Mogale City are invited to be part of the solution to climate change as applications officially open for the 2026 Youth Climate Action Fund (YCAF).
The fund aims to empower young people to lead community-based climate action projects that deliver environmental, social and economic benefits while contributing to a more sustainable and resilient Mogale City.
Through this funding round, between 8 and 50 youth-led projects will receive microgrants ranging from USD 1,000 to USD 5,000 (approximately R16 350 to R81 750). Funding will be awarded based on innovation, feasibility, community impact, sustainability and overall contribution to climate action.
Who can apply?
- Young people aged 15 to 24 years
- Youth groups and clubs
- Youth-led community-based organisations
- Youth-led non-profit organisations
- Informal youth groups with a designated project leader
Applicants must reside, study, work or actively operate within the Mogale City.
What types of projects can be funded?
Projects must address one or more of the following climate action themes:
Climate Change Mitigation
- Renewable energy awareness initiatives.
- Energy efficiency projects.
- Sustainable transport initiatives.
- Community carbon reduction activities.
Climate Change Adaptation
- Water conservation initiatives.
- Climate-resilient food gardens.
- Drought and heat adaptation projects.
- Community resilience-building activities.
Environmental Sustainability
- Waste reduction and recycling programmes.
- Circular economy initiatives.
- Tree planting and urban greening.
- Wetland, river and ecosystem restoration.
- Biodiversity conservation projects.
Climate Education and Awareness
- Climate literacy campaigns.
- School and community awareness programmes.
- Youth climate leadership initiatives.
- Environmental education activities.
Innovation and Technology
- New climate technologies.
- Digital climate solutions.
- Innovative environmental practices.
- Pilot projects addressing local climate challenges.
Projects that demonstrate innovation, create measurable environmental impact and have a clear plan for continuing beyond the grant period will receive favourable consideration during the evaluation process.
Application requirements
Applicants must submit the following:
- A completed Microgrant Application Form.
- A detailed project description.
- A project implementation timeline.
- A project budget.
- A sustainability and continuation plan.
- All supporting documents requested in the application form.
Funding exclusions
The fund will not support political campaigns or activities, religious activities unrelated to climate action, debt repayment, personal expenses unrelated to the project, activities that may harm the environment or projects that discriminate against any individual or group.
