West Rand municipalities, in partnership with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) and ICLEI Africa, hosted the first-ever Town Hall Conference of the Parties (COP) at Mogale City’s Centenary Hall on 28 October.

Held under the theme “Think Global, Act Local,” the conference brought together local leaders, civil society, faith-based organisations, and businesses to strengthen collaboration and drive local climate action.

The Town Hall COP initiative, launched in April 2025, aims to bring climate dialogue closer to communities, helping residents understand the causes and impacts of climate change and identify local solutions for resilience and adaptation.

Although the West Rand has not yet experienced the most severe effects of climate change, early signs – including rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, and droughts – highlight the need for proactive local interventions. Municipalities are responding through urban greening, recycling and waste reduction projects, and environmental education initiatives, especially in schools.

As South Africa prepares for the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil this November, local leaders are using the platform to mobilise resources and enhance disaster preparedness to support long-term climate resilience.
