Building on last month’s Munsieville Service Delivery Intervention, the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport in partnership with Mogale City Local Municipality, kicked off a two-week long programme of bringing urgent, tangible services directly to residents in the township of Swaneville.
Led by Gauteng MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela and MMC for Public Safety Francis Makgatho, the operation mobilised several municipal, district, provincial and other government departments in a synchronised and collaborative effort to fast-track critical community services over the two weeks.
Launched this morning at 08:00, teams were deployed across Swaneville township and its neighbouring areas to execute the required rapid service improvements, including:
- Conduct roadblocks and by-law enforcement
- Road repairs, refurbishment, potholes, and fresh line markings
- Streetlight maintenance and restorations
- Sewer unblocking and burst pipe repairs
- Clearing of illegal dumping hotspots and environmental education
- Indigent support and on-site registrations
- Social upliftment and development programmes awareness
- Customer walk-in assistance on municipal accounts, enquiries, payment arrangements and education including Licensing Services awareness
- Business compliance, licensing, registration awareness and other support
The programme also afforded residents an opportunity to engage directly with senior leadership and service teams, ensuring concerns are addressed on the spot and long-standing issues are unblocked with immediate action.
“While we fully support this collaborative, hands-on approach to service delivery, we are also calling for increased active citizenry,” said MEC Diale-Tlabela. “Residents must play an active role in shaping their communities and working with government – going beyond voting to include volunteering, advocacy, and shared responsibility, particularly in addressing challenges such as illegal dumping by members of the community.”
“Taking lead from the successes of last month’s Munsieville Service Delivery Intervention programme, we’ve extended the time working hands in our streets where the delivery of services matter most,” said MMC for Public Safety Francis Makgatho. Makgatho who was standing in for the Executive Mayor reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to accelerating service and rebuilding trust within Mogale City communities.
Not only does the two-week long approach allow all stakeholders to roll out a more focused and heightened programme of on-the-ground service delivery, but an intervention strengthened by added time and community contact. This augurs perfectly well for improved government efficiency, strengthening accountability, and reaffirming our administration’s commitment to putting people first by joining hands and resources.
