Heritage must be preserved through innovation and digitalisation, while being modernised to drive economic empowerment and community development for generations. This was the central message as the Gauteng Provincial Government joined the nation in celebrating Heritage Day at the Kagiso Sports Complex yesterday.
Premier Panyaza Lesufi, joined by Gauteng MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR), Matome Chiloane, Mogale’s Deputy Mayor Bongani Nkosi, and SACR MMC Cynthia Mankanza, led the celebrations under the theme “Reimagining Our Institutions for a New Era.”
SACR outlined its vision to transform heritage institutions such as museums, cultural centres, and heritage sites into spaces that not only preserve history but also create, innovate, and empower communities. The aim is for young people to find inspiration not only in where we come from, but also in where we are going. For entrepreneurs, these spaces should unlock sustainable business opportunities rooted in indigenous knowledge systems.
To advance this vision, SARC has already introduced programmes such as:
- Digitalising heritage institutions to provide virtual tours, giving learners in rural areas access they might never have had physically.
- The Indigenous Knowledge Documentation Programme which preserves traditional wisdom while creating platforms for elders and traditional leaders to mentor young innovators in sustainable living practices.
As part of the programme, Premier Lesufi also launched five Gig Rig Trucks, designed to support communities when hosting events. Each truck is fully equipped with a stage, sound system, generator, TV screens, and lighting.
The Premier further observed Arbor Month by planting five indigenous trees at the Kagiso Recreational Centre as part of the Greening Mogale initiative, reaffirming government’s commitment to sustainability and environmental care.
The celebration was a true reflection of South Africa’s identity: diverse, vibrant, and deeply rooted in tradition showcased through cultural dances and the colourful display of traditional attire.
