A new homeless shelter in Burgershoop, Krugersdorp West, has officially opened, marking a significant step towards restoring dignity to those living on the streets.

The facility was launched by Mogale City’s Social Upliftment Division in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Social Development, at an event attended by government officials, community members, and civil society organisations that showcased the power of collaboration in addressing homelessness.

Executive Mayor Lucky Sele and Social Development MEC Faith Mazibuko unveiled the curtain, marking the official opening of the shelter.

Mayor Sele described the facility as “more than just a roof over people’s heads,” calling it a pathway to independence made possible through partnerships between government, non-profits, and the community.

Operated by Quegal Restoration & Refuge Centre, the shelter can accommodate up to 120 people in eight purpose-built container units. It features a fully equipped kitchen providing three meals a day, separate male and female showers, and a safe environment for gardening, skills development, and social interaction. Beyond accommodation, residents have access to bakery projects, agricultural programmes, substance abuse treatment, medical screening, counselling, and family reunification services.

MEC Mazibuko emphasised that the initiative recognises the humanity of each beneficiary, adding that those leaving the shelter will be seen as individuals with dignity and potential. MMC for Social Development and Health, Wonderful Segolodi, echoed this sentiment, noting that the project is about restoring dignity to the homeless, who, as she put it, “are not hopeless.”

The Department of Social Development, together with municipalities, non-profits, and faith-based organisations, will continue placing homeless individuals in temporary shelters while providing essential services and opportunities to rebuild their lives.
