In a bold step to drive economic growth and support investment in Mogale City, Executive Mayor Lucky Sele, joined by members of the Mayoral Committee, attended the relaunch of Mogale Tailing Retreatment (MTR) on Friday, 19 September 2025.

The reopening was hailed as more than the revival of a mine, it marks a turning point for Mogale City. With renewed operations, MTR is expected to create much-needed jobs, uplift communities through social responsibility programmes, and stimulate the local economy.

This relaunch coincides with National Government’s approval of artisanal and small-scale mining initiatives. Mayor Sele emphasised that MTR should not only prepare employees for current jobs but also equip them with the skills and knowledge to become future mine owners and operators.

MTR’s partnerships with local businesses and NGOs showcase its commitment to inclusive development:

  • Oupa’s Lawn – supporting community greening projects
  • Education of Hope Africa – advancing education initiatives
  • Green IQ – promoting environmental sustainability

These collaborations prove that responsible industry creates a ripple effect, strengthening communities beyond profit.

MTR has also worked with the Office of the Executive Mayor on impactful community initiatives, including:

  • Donating sporting kits and equipment to local teams
  • Supporting Mandela Day activities at the Thusong Centre
  • Contributing to Back-to-School programmes at Atlolang Primary and DW Olifant Primary
  • Awarding full bursaries to two top matric learners

Together, these efforts tell a powerful story of an organisation committed not just to mining resources, but to investing in people, uplifting communities, and shaping the future of Mogale City.
