To recover over R12 million owed to the municipality by defaulting customers, Mogale City’s Credit Control Division heightened its revenue collection measures earlier this month by clamping down on businesses, individual households, and residential estates in arrears.
This forms part of the city’s ongoing “Ra Tima” campaign, a revenue recovery initiative that encourages all residents and businesses to pay for municipal services they have used. The campaign aims to restore a culture of payment, improve revenue collection, and ensure the municipality can continue delivering essential services sustainably.
As part of the strengthened efforts, credit control teams, accompanied by Public Safety, conducted targeted visits to households and businesses with overdue accounts and carried out disconnections.
Among the large value defaulters, Sportsbet was disconnected for owing over R2 million, while Avedore Kwekery owed over R1 million. Even households in affluent estates such as Homes Haven and Lakeside Gardens faced disconnections for accumulating large service bills and failing to make payments.
Disconnection remains the last resort, implemented only after clients repeatedly fail to respond to communication from the municipality. Prior to any disconnection, customers receive warning notices and a final letter of demand, outlining the outstanding amounts and potential consequences of non-payment.
The campaign is already showing positive results, with almost R1 million recovered in a short period. This demonstrates both the effectiveness of the intensified enforcement actions and the willingness of customers to co-operate once engaged.
Mogale City urges all residents and businesses with outstanding accounts to take advantage of the current debt relief initiative, which offers a 100% interest write-off on overdue municipal accounts for qualifying customers who either settle their accounts in full or enter a valid payment arrangement. This relief programme is available from 24 November to 24 December 2025.
