The dream of a new, vibrant and connected urban centre in Mogale City is now a reality as Leratong City Mall prepares to open its doors on 29 October.
The shopping centre forms part of Phase 1 of the R5 billion Leratong Smart City Development, a transformative project aimed at creating a centralised, mixed-use urban environment where people can live, work, shop and access essential services closer to home.
Residents can look forward to a strong mix of major retailers and popular brands, including Pick n Pay, Boxer, Shoprite, Roots, OBC, Clicks, Dis-chem, Sportscene, Markham, Mr Price, Panarottis, McDonald’s, KFC, Milky Lane and many more.
The development will also feature a larger-than-life amphitheatre with the capacity to seat up to 1 000 people for movie nights, live entertainment and sports screenings – creating a space for community members to experience and celebrate the greatness of Mogale.
Beyond the retail offering, the Leratong Smart City Development has prioritised local economic participation, labour utilisation and the empowerment of local businesses within Mogale City from its inception.
Expected to create 2 500 employment opportunities in total, the development has to date created 1 050 opportunities. 45 Local SMME’s and companies have been utilised during construction across wards 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 20 – 23, 26, 34, 35, 36, 127 and 128.
Ward 9 recorded the highest participation, with nine local companies appointed, followed by Ward 5 with five companies and Ward 128 with four companies.
583 of the 1 050 positions created to date have been filled by members of the local community, resulting in 55.52% local labour participation. Several local contractors achieved full local employment representation, further contributing to employment opportunities within Mogale City.
The project has also provided workplace experience opportunities to 44 students, supporting skills transfer and giving young people practical exposure to construction-related fields.
As the mall moves towards opening, additional permanent employment opportunities are expected to become available across the retail, security, cleaning and services sectors.
