The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has announced 1 and 2 August 2026 as the final voter registration weekend ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections, which are scheduled to take place in November 2026.
The Commission is encouraging all eligible South Africans to exercise their democratic right by ensuring they are registered to vote and that their voter registration details are correct and up to date.
Voting stations across the country will be open from 08:00 to 17:00 on Saturday, 1 August, and Sunday, 2 August 2026, to assist residents with new voter registrations and updates to existing registration details.
In addition, the IEC’s online voter registration portal will be available 24 hours a day throughout the registration weekend, allowing citizens to register or update their information at their convenience. No data is required to access the online registration platform.
Residents who have relocated since the last election are encouraged to verify their registration details and update their voting district to ensure they are registered in the correct ward and voting station.
To register as a voter, you must:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be at least 16 years old (although you may only vote from the age of 18)
- Be in possession of a valid green barcoded identity document, Smart ID card or temporary identity certificate
The IEC urges all eligible voters who have not yet registered, as well as those who need to update their registration details, to take advantage of this final registration opportunity before the November 2026 Local Government Elections.
