As part of the Executive Mayor’s ongoing Service Delivery Intervention Programme, the City this week intensified its efforts to strengthen basic service provision in the community of Azaadville.
The week-long intervention forms part of a sustained, hands-on approach aimed at bringing municipal services closer to residents, restoring and improving critical infrastructure, and addressing identified service delivery backlogs. The programme is designed to ensure that essential services are delivered efficiently, responsively and with the urgency communities deserve.
The intervention programme commenced in Munsieville late last year, followed by focused operations in Swannieville and Rietvallei Extensions 2 and 3. The current deployment in Azaadville builds on the momentum established in these areas.
Through coordinated efforts by key service delivery and support departments, the City has implemented a range of targeted interventions, including:
- Streetlight repairs and maintenance
- Road resurfacing and pothole patching
- Clearing of illegal dumping sites, with plans to rehabilitate selected areas into usable recreational spaces
- Grass cutting and general environmental maintenance
- Addressing electricity outages and repairing water leaks
- Compliance inspections and by-law enforcement operations
The identification of priority hotspots and service challenges was undertaken in collaboration with Ward Councillor Shabir Dhabelia, ensuring that the intervention directly responds to community-raised concerns. Particular attention was given to areas experiencing recurring electricity interruptions, water leakages, overgrown public spaces, and environmental health concerns.
During the operation, the City’s Environmental Health Services and the Enterprise and Rural Development Unit within Economic Development Services intensified compliance inspections. Through strengthened by-law enforcement, several non-compliant businesses were closed for operating without valid Certificates of Compliance, Certificates of Acceptability, and required fire safety certifications.
The Service Delivery Intervention Programme underscores the City’s commitment to proactive governance, regulatory compliance, and improved living conditions for all residents. The municipality remains steadfast in its resolve to restore service excellence and enhance the quality of life within communities across the City.
