A joint roadblock by Mogale City Public Safety officials, SAPS and the Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, coupled with the unveiling of 18 new law-enforcement vehicles set the tone for the city’s official 2025 Festive Season Road Safety Campaign this past Friday.  What unfolded was more than just a launch, it was a clear and loud statement that boots will be on the ground this festive season, and violations of traffic laws will not be tolerated.

Held on the R24 outside the Krugersdorp Nature Reserve, a major route linking Gauteng and the North West, the programme began with a seven-hour roadblock followed by a parade of traffic and police officers.

Programme Director and Mogale City Executive Director for Community Development, Lovey Modiba, emphasised that safer roads depend on every driver, passenger and pedestrian making responsible choices. Her message aligns with this year’s theme, “It Starts With Me,” underscoring the crucial role of individual behaviour in preventing loss of life.

While officers demonstrated strong enforcement presence on the ground, the roadblock results showed worrying trends and a lack of readiness among some road users ahead of the holiday period. Of the 209 vehicles stopped, 31 warrants of arrest were executed, 8 vehicles had outstanding tickets, 12 written fines and one arrest for driving under the influence of liquor. Road users, both residents and visitors, are urged to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, fines are settled, and all vehicle documents are in order before embarking on any trips.

To reinforce this effort, the city unveiled a new 18-car fleet to further strengthen visibility and operational readiness. The fleet includes 14 traffic patrol vehicles, two by-law enforcement bakkies, a disaster management vehicle and a security bakkie, all aimed at bolstering operational capacity throughout the festive season.

The message is clear: to ensure a safer city visibility will be heightened, enforcement will be intensified, and boots will be firmly on the ground to assist you arrive alive.
