Mogale City’s Energy Services is pleased to inform residents about the implementation of the Prepaid Smart Electricity Metering Project, which officially begins now in the month of July 2025. This initiative forms part of the National Treasury’s RT29 transversal contract and marks a significant step forward in modernising electricity services within the city.

The Smart Metering Project is more than a technical upgrade; it represents a transformative shift in how electricity is delivered and managed. It is a step towards fairness, transparency, and reliability. Smart meters will not only allow residents to pay for what they use but also enable them to monitor their electricity usage. In addition, the new system will help the municipality detect faults more quickly and curb tampering and illegal connections, which have long burdened the city’s infrastructure and finances.

The project will begin with a physical audit of existing meters across the municipality. During this phase, auditors will visit your area to assess the condition of your meter infrastructure. Please note the following:

  1. If your meter is inside your property – please allow the auditor access to your home.
  2. The auditor will not change anything on your existing meter box – they are only there to assess the state of your meter.
  3. Your access to power will not be affected during the audit
  4. The auditor will collect the following information: meter condition, meter location, meter type, resident or municipal account holder details, and municipal account number.

Once the audit process is complete, the Municipality will begin with the replacement of prepaid meters with new smart meters.

We thank you in advance for your cooperation and support throughout this project. Further information will be shared in due course regarding rollout schedules and opportunities for community engagement.
