As the Easter holiday approaches, Mogale City’s Public Safety extends warm wishes to all residents and stakeholders for a safe and joyful Easter on our city’s roads.

This message comes in the wake of the Department of Transport’s national road safety campaign, officially launched by Minister Barbara Creecy in Gqeberha on Sunday, 13 April 2025. Themed “It Begins With Me,” the campaign aims to raise awareness and reduce road crashes and fatalities during the Easter period.

In her address, Minister Creecy identified the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and Limpopo as the provinces that collectively account for over 76% of road accidents and deaths in South Africa. With this sobering reality in mind, Mogale City urges all road users to remain vigilant and responsible while travelling this Easter.

As many prepare to hit the road, it is important to reflect on the State of Road Safety Report, compiled by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) for the 2024 Easter period. The report reveals that Gauteng recorded the second-highest number of road accidents, with over 60 fatalities reported during Easter alone.

Even more alarming, the RTMC found that tyre bursts accounted for over 83.3% of road accidents nationwide during this period. Considering this, Mogale City’s Public Safety is urging all motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before setting off, placing particular emphasis on tyre safety.

Here are three crucial tyre checks every driver should perform before travelling:

  • Tyre Pressure – Incorrect pressure can lead to blowouts or loss of traction. Always inflate tyres to the manufacturer’s recommended levels.
  • Tread Depth – Worn tread reduces grip, especially on wet roads. Make sure your tyres meet the legal minimum of 1.6 mm, and replace them if needed.
  • Visible Damage or Cracks – Look out for cuts, bulges, cracks, or foreign objects embedded in the tyre. These can cause sudden failures at high speeds.

By taking just a few minutes to inspect your tyres, you could help prevent accidents and save lives. Let’s all do our part to ensure a safe, incident-free Easter season, it begins with you!

Once again, Mogale City wishes you a safe and joyful Easter as you travel through our city’s roads and beyond.
