Mogale City Local Municipality has joined Gauteng’s metros and other local municipalities in signing a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to strengthen borderless municipal law enforcement across the province.
The MOU was signed on 15 March 2025 at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), Soweto Campus sports grounds, during a high-level event led by Premier Panyaza Lesufi and MEC Jacob Mamabolo. Executive Mayors, MMCs for Safety, and Municipal Managers committed to a united front in fighting crime.
The ceremony was preceded by coordinated roadblocks across Gauteng, resulting in over 300 arrests, including for serious crimes such as murder and gender-based violence. Several illegal firearms were recovered, undocumented individuals detained, and non-compliant spaza shops closed.
This collaborative safety drive, dubbed the “crime and grime” initiative, will see municipalities working together to address crime, illegal dumping, and by-law violations—particularly during peak periods like Easter and the festive season.
Premier Lesufi described the MOU as a commitment to reclaiming Gauteng from criminals, while Johannesburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero pledged to restore safety and dignity to the city.
