Mogale City Executive Mayor Lucky Sele and MEC for Gauteng Social Development Faith Mazibuko have turned a long-held dream into reality for the senior citizens of Kagiso this past Friday. The pair officially opened the state-of-the-art Kagiso Centre for the Elderly, fulfilling a commitment made in 2016 when the project was first proposed during an Integrated Development Plan (IDP) meeting.
Completed in October 2024 at a cost of R30 million, the centre was finally granted an occupational certificate by Rand West Municipality, allowing it to start operating.
The facility, which is designed to accommodate up to 100 occupants, will operate as a day care hub weekday from 07h30 to 16h00, catering to the needs of senior citizens aged 60 and above. Applications for admission can be obtained at the centre’s reception.
Boasting a range of modern amenities, the centre features a spacious hall, staff offices, a well-equipped gym, sewing equipment and a designated room, a serene courtyard, ample parking, and 24/7 on-site security. Additionally, a social auxiliary worker and a caregiver will be available to assist the elderly, with meals provided to all participants involved in the various activities offered.
Beyond promoting physical well-being, the centre also aims to foster companionship, providing a space where the elderly can share stories and experiences, thus reducing the risk of loneliness. Government departments will collaborate with the centre to offer valuable guidance on important matters such as health, drafting wills, and protecting property ownership rights, ensuring that the elderly remain informed and empowered.
The opening event was also attended by MMC for Health and Social Development Wonderful Segologi, Single Whip of Council Tsholofelo Ramaisa, ward councillors, and Community Development Services Executive Manager Lovey Modiba.
With the opening of this centre, Mogale City reaffirms its commitment to the well-being of senior citizens, ensuring they have access to recreational facilities, companionship, and opportunities for an active and fulfilling old age.
