Recognising that safety and security are essential for delivering quality tourism experience, the Department of Tourism in collaboration with Mogale City’s Tourism Development Division, recently hosted a Domestic Tourism and Safety Awareness Campaign. The campaign formed part of broader efforts to strengthen tourism safety awareness at key attraction sites and ensure that both tourists and tourism stakeholders are equipped with essential safety information. This initiative aligns with the department’s national awareness strategy which aims to minimize the vulnerabilities of tourists, reduce crime incidents and promote responsible practices. By fostering safer travel environments, the campaign contributes to sustaining a positive tourism experience while encouraging inter-provincial travel.

The campaign took place from 4 – 6 March 2025, covering below locations and activities designed to educate both community members and industry stakeholders on tourism safety:

  • Community tourism engagement (4 March, Hekpoort)

Community members were introduced to various tourism products and services, highlighting the economic and social value of the sector.

  • Tourism awareness workshop (5 March, Magaliesberg)

Local tourism stakeholders participated in an interactive session focusing on crime prevention, emergency response, and visitor safety protocols.

  • Tourism safety blitz (6 March, Phelindaba and Ashenti Road)

In collaboration with Mogale’s Public Safety, the South African Police Service, and Road Traffic Infringement Agency, the campaign concluded with roadside stops to educate motorists on tourism safety tips and crime prevention measures.

The campaign was supported by a range of stakeholders, including the North West Department of Economic Development, Gauteng Tourism Authority, Gauteng Department of Community Safety, and ER24. Their collective efforts reinforced the importance of inter-agency collaboration in ensuring safer tourism experiences.

By prioritising tourism safety, Mogale City and the Department of Tourism reaffirm their commitment to fostering a sustainable and secure tourism industry, ensuring that local and international visitors can explore with confidence.
