Gauteng Speaker of Legislature Morakane Mosupyoe accompanied by Mogale City Executive Mayor Lucky Sele and Gauteng West District Education Director Jones Rajuili, kick started the beginning of the school year by visiting Thuto Pele Secondary School in Kagiso as part of the 2025 Back-to-School School Readiness programme.
Thuto Pele Secondary is no ordinary school; it is renowned for its outstanding academic performance. For the Matric Class of 2024, the school achieved an impressive 94.5% pass rate, making it one of the best achieving township schools in the West Rand Region. In the previous three years, the school also maintained a 100% pass rate, solidifying its reputation as one of the top-performing township schools in the West Rand.
In her address, Speaker Mosupyoe encouraged leaners to remain focussed on their studies, respect their teachers and parents and live exemplary lives in their communities. “I am happy that the principal emphasised that the foundation of this school is prayer. If there is any group you wish to join, let it be a prayer group,” she firmly advised.
“Stay committed to your schoolwork, make wise choices about your future, and resist peer pressure,” Mosupyoe further encouraged learners.
Recognising this excellence, Mayor Sele accompanied by his team of councillors praised the class of 2024 for their remarkable achievement. “We are proud of the Matric Class of 2024, which has done exceptionally well – we give them a special round of applause,” he said, prompting loud cheers from the assembly.
The mayor further emphasised the transformative power of education citing that with education learners hold the power to break free from the shackles of poverty. This however, they can only achieve by taking their education seriously .
The visit concluded with the distribution of dignity packs and sanitary towels to both boys and girls, ensuring that learners have the necessary support for their academic journey.
