The municipality’s Biodiversity Management Division has identified several parks and open spaces under its jurisdiction to be considered to form part of the Adopt A Park programme. Community members, non-profit organisations, commerce, industries and other interested parties are invited to adopt targeted parks and open spaces for a period of 3 years renewable for a maximum adoption period of 9 years, 11 months subject to a re-evaluation of the application and council adoption. The following targeted areas, parks and spots have been considered to form part of the programme:
Interested parties are also encouraged to express an interest in any other park or public space that may not appear on the abovementioned list for consideration by the municipality.
How to adopt a park?
Park adoption (i.e. a portion of a park or any public open space) would be for the purpose of maintaining, preserving, developing and improving it and to carry out any such work or activities as agreed upon by the adopter and the municipality, also referred to as the applicant
- All public open spaces, municipal parks and all other properties owned by the municipality within the entire jurisdiction of Mogale City Local Municipality where illegal dumping, littering and or poor maintenance of public open space/s takes place are included in the list
- Adoption shall be based on volunteerism, the applicant should not raise any expectations that there shall be remuneration or incentives paid by the municipality in recognition of the work done, neither shall the applicant develop a sense of entitlement towards any opportunity that may arise with the adopted area
- The adopted park or open space should always be accessible to all members of the public and no fee should be charged at any point
- The programme shall apply to any person who is interested irrespective of age, gender or race.
Application procedure
- Applications can be submitted to the Department Integrated Environmental Management, Biodiversity Management offices or via email to adoptapark@mogalecity.gov.za
- The Executive Manager for Department of Integrated Environmental Management shall consider comments and recommendations from the assessment committee and approve or reject applications
- All applications shall be accompanied by the following documents:
- A draft summary of the business plan and/or design of the project to be developed
- Presentation which includes a purpose, background, proposal, source of funding, concluding remarks and a possible partnership if applicable
- Photograph of the illegal dumping spot/park/open space to be adopted – if any
- Description of the property
- Consent letter obtainable from Biodiversity Management offices or Mogale City website
- ID copies of the adopter/s or entity registration document
- Proof of address
- The assessment outcome will be communicated with the applicant
