Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with Mogale City Local Municipality played their part in maintaining a green and eco-friendly environment by organising a tree planting occasion in the Munsieville township.
Aimed at highlighting the importance of trees and their role in our daily lives by providing clean air, good health and countering climate change, the event also sought to inspire Mogale City residents to plant trees in their households and act against pressing issues such as deforestation and climate change.
Led by Executive Mayor Danny Thupane as a host city delegate, Speaker of Council Lucky Sele, Members of the Mayoral Committee, Mogale City officials from Integrated Environmental Management Department and representatives of various agricultural entities planted over 500 indigenous and fruit trees as well as 7 symbolic trees in different sections of the township.
Executive Mayor encouraged attendees to plant indigenous trees as a symbolic act of sustainable environmental management. He further called for participation in greening communities from all sectors of society including the public, the commercial sector, non-governmental organisations, and community-based organisations.
South Africa celebrates Arbor Month in September annually to recognise the need for raising awareness of the value of trees in the society.
