Public access to clean, safe and drinkable water is not only a fundamental need but also basic human right.

Driven by this, a commitment to provide access to quality water and as part of Mogale City Local Municipality’s service delivery goals to ensure the provision of safe drinking water for all; four new boreholes were launched on 23 February 2023 in Rhenospruit Plot 7 community.

Currently, this community does not have access to municipal bulk infrastructure (water or electricity), therefore no access to clean and safe water.  In reducing costs of distribution through water tankers services, several alternative, strategic and sustainable options were considered.

The municipality therefore embarked on solar-powered boreholes as an improved alternative. A small water treatment plant had been assembled at each of the boreholes, where the borehole water has undergone various treatment procedures from filtration to disinfection via chlorine and UV-light processes.

The four boreholes which now supply water to 45 JoJo tanks distributed throughout the community has also undergone the required testing and we can therefore safely say that it complies with drinking water standards i.e. SANS 241.  Fire hydrants were also installed across the community to ensure safety in cases of fire.

In wrapping a day packed with hard work and excitement, designate MMC for Infrastructure Development Services (including Water and Sanitation) Cllr Kagiso Lekagane concluded that his department will continue to look at alternative, cost effective and sustainable solutions to service communities to fulfil its water services authority mandate.
