There is no denying that provincial and local road networks across the country wear out overtime due to ageing and certain environmental factors such as heavy rains. Subsequently, the Gauteng Department of Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure (GPDRT), working jointly with municipalities has undertaken a Smart Mobility Weekends Campaign aimed at improving the overall conditions of the province’s road network and enhance road maintenance.
Launched on April 11 2021, the campaign seeks to address identified problems on the road network across the province such as potholes, damaged road surface, grass cutting, installation of road signage and fixing of traffic lights.
This past weekend, GPDRT visited various sites in Mogale City to rehabilitate the roads as part of the campaign. Joined by the city’s Executive Mayor Francis Makgatho, Mogale MMC for Roads and Transport Betty Mdlane and relevant Municipal officials attended to identified road surfaces and potholes in Kagiso – this to ensure that the stretch of road is maintained to acceptable standards that are safe for all motorists and allow for easy movement of people and goods in Mogale.
These joint efforts resulted in resurfacing of roads and patch-up of potholes on main roads of Maimane, Sebenzisa and Sandpaper – all in the Swanneville and Kagiso townships. The follow-up leg of work happening this coming weekend will see the project moving directly into communities.
