The Executive Mayor of Mogale City Naga Lipudi has expressed his gratitude for the assistance that is being provided by the West Rand District Municipality and the provincial government in the aftermath of the storm that wreaked havoc across the city.

The freak storm has caused massive damage to the city with the roof of Cradlestone Mall coming off, about 64 people in Tarlton requiring accommodation, 35 in Munsieville old location and 80% of Mayibuye Township having lost their roofs as well.

This is but the minimum damage as reported by communities, and the picture will change as the situation is assessed further. The rand amount of the damage can only be expressed after a full assessment.

West Rand District Municipality and the provincial government disaster teams have just concluded a joint operations meeting to respond to the situation. Three buses will be dispatched to Orient Hills to fetch the affected families who will be housed temporarily at Nelson Mandela hall tonight. More community halls will be opened to help the affected families around the city. Three trucks have been sent to the disaster offices to fetch mattresses, blankets and food to help the communities.

The municipality also wants to thank organised Women structures in Magaliesburg for assisting with making accommodation of the affected families at Magaliesburg Ubuntu Centre and the Civic Centre. We are also grateful for the assistance in blankets, clothing and food that is being donated to the families. We hope that this solidarity can be displayed by all in the city so that we can make light the burden of affected families.

We also want to thank Al Imdaad Foundation which works with the provincial emergency services team and donates mattresses, blankets, hygiene packs and roof sheeting to all those who were negatively affected.

Technical teams have also been deployed to various areas where electricity supply has been disrupted to ensure that it is restored. We appeal to communities to bear with us during this time as we try to bring life back to normal.
