Much favoured Munsieville Magical Galacticos FC were this past Sunday crowned the 2023 Mogale City Mayor’s Cup champions after beating VT United FC by 2-0 in a closely contested men’s senior finals held at the Munsieville Sports Complex.
Galacticos showed discipline and composure throughout the game, allowing their opponents to attack and caught them on counter attacks which led to two magnificent goals by Zolile Khunji and Saketso Moremi.
The winners went all the way to the bank smiling having increased their bank balance by R50 000, while VT United got a R20 000 second prize for their efforts. For other categories, prizes ranged from R10 000 to R5 000, with the masters and women soccer winners each receiving R10 000.
The three-week long 2023 Mayor’s Cup was held from 7 to 29 October with the much-awaited finals across various categories played on 26 November. Drawing great interest and participation, the tournament attracted 32 Men Seniors Teams, 16 Under 13 Teams, 8 Women Soccer Teams, 16 Masters Soccer Teams, 10 Under 15 Netball Teams and 9 Under 19 Netball Teams.
The tournament is a major sport development instrument in Mogale City under the tutelage of Executive Mayor Danny Thupane. It is a contest that aims to develop local sports, encourage healthy lifestyle amongst youth and adults, increase social cohesion and take youth off the streets in our townships – but most importantly, to elevate players to the elite sports structures.
The winners in each category received a floating trophy, medals and sport apparels, while the losing teams got silver medals and participating kits.
