As the municipality continues to seek permanent solutions to the fire and related Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site challenges, our Integrated Waste Management Division wishes to inform residents that earthmoving equipment to address the current smouldering has been sourced and work to address the critical of damage the fire has commenced.

Again, our Integrated Waste Management would like to sincerely apologise to residents that had to endure smouldering and soot from the extinguished fire while lengthy internal Supply Chain Management processes were underway. Transportation and delivery of the machinery further delayed the commencement of this important work.

The procured landfill compactors that are already operating on site will help spread the waste evenly in layers over the landfill and compact waste so it takes up less space but will most importantly decrease the dangers landfill gas emissions and fire. More equipment will also be procured to address these challenges at the Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site as a matter of urgency.

We continue to thank residents for their understanding and further ask for their patience as we continue to carry out work on site. It is important to mention that due to elevated wind speeds at this time of the year, it may take a relatively longer time to completely subdue the smouldering.
